Fort Monroe is located at Old Point Comfort, which is on the tip of the Virginia Peninsula. Along with Fort Calhoun, it guarded approach by sea of the navigational shipping channel between the Chesapeake Bay and the entrance to the harbor of Hampton Roads.

The main gate is 3 miles southeast of Hampton on East Mellen Street.

Note: As a result of BRAC 2005, Fort Monroe officially closed in September 2011.
