West Jefferson started life as a railroad town over 100 years ago. Being in a valley of the Appalachian Mountains, it draws tourists with its natural beauty and historic charm. The downtown Arts District features murals depicting the area's past, and Gallery Crawls are held in the summer and during the winter holiday season.
Visitors can browse antique shops in Old Town or stop at the Ashe County Cheese Plant and Cheese Store. The Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is a popular place for hiking, picnics, and enjoying the outdoors.
The Ashe County Farmers' Market is open from April through October, and a holiday market is open from Thanksgiving through the first week of December.
